I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 1st inst. No.31142, with correspondence between the Governor of Hong Kong and the Colonial Secretary on the subject of instruction in Tropical Medicine to Medical Officers from that Colony.
The Committee are of opinion that in the case of Medical Officers whose appointments are conditional on their taking out the course (as in the case of Medical Officers on probation, or of those who are in the receipt of pay on study leave) Certificates should be required. In the case of Medical Officers and Private Practitioners who are attending at their own desire Certificates should not be required. This has been the practice in dealing with Medical Officers from other contributing Colonies whether they attend ordinary or special courses. It is not necessary to obtain a special Certificate of attendance in the case of Students who present themselves for the Cambridge examination as this is required by the University authorities in any
event.
The only object that the Committee and Teachers of the School nad in making the suggestions contained in the letter of the 10th of June was in the interest of the Colony and the efficiency of its medical department but they will be pleased to meet the views of the Colonial
