Sir:-
With reference to my letter of the 19th. ultimo,
respecting the powers of His Majesty's Supreme Court at
Shanghai to order deportation from China and Cores, I
am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to transmit to you,
herewith for the information of the Earl of Crewe, copy
of a despatch on the subject from the Judge of the Su-
preme Court.
It will be observed that the Hongkong authorities
do not, appear to share the doubt which had presented
itself to Sir E. Grey, as stated in my letter above re-
ferred to, as to whether the Foreign Jurisdiction Act
1890 enables such an Order in Council as Sir Havilland
Fore
de Sausmarez desires, to be passed, and that they ap-
pear to consider that no legislation will be necessary
in Hongkong.
e Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
