CUSTOMS succession (see your telegram No. 117 of the 8th July). I have also been informed by Sir R. Hart that the Chinese, without formally granting, have acknowledged his request that his leave might be extended, and have said, "There are several important matters in hand, and we want you back in two or three months." He has replied that, if the doctors permit, he will return in October. I have expressed the hope that he may be well enough to accede to their wishes in this respect,
