SECTION 2.
[24902]
(No. 113.)
(Telegraphic.) P.
No. 1.
Sir J. Jordan to Sir Edward Grey.-(Received July 2.)
CUSTOMS succession.
Peking, July 2, 1909.
I have received your telegram No. 116 of the 26th ultimo, and have to-day learnt, in the course of a private conversation with Liang Tun-yen, that the Chinese would probably accept any candidate recommended by Sir R. Hart. The latter, I was told, had not yet formally applied for an extension of leave, but the Chinese were awaiting the receipt of such an application before strongly urging Sir Robert to return to Peking. His presence here, if only for a few months, would be of great assistance in settling the succession question, about which they were unable to arrive at an agreement.
