Notice by the Self Government Speiąty of a public meeting.
convened for August 5th 1707.
gust 5, 1900.
With reference to the "Fatshan case' * in which the
Chinese passenger Ho Yu Ting was brutally kicked to death by the ship's Portuguese watchman Noronha, it is well know that there were many eye witnesses of whom Messrs
Fong, Tam, Yang and Chang who were fellow passengers act- ually gave evidence at the joint examination. The refusal of the Portuguese Consul to hold a joint and impartial trial and his subsequent reckless alenders were protested against by the late Viceroy Chung. The Society has also sent several letters requesting an explanation, all of which have been ignored to the great indignation of Chinese at home and abroad. During the last few months letters have been received from Chinese merchants in the Phillipines and other foreign ports expressing indignation at this murder of a Chinese passenger by a Portuguese.
The Society has now received a letter from Vessrs Butterfield and Swire to the following effect :-
"We are willing to dismiss the captain of the "Fatshun" and "to pay the sum of $3,200 to the deceased's relatives. This
sur will be increased by $2,000 by the Compradore's de- "partment, making a total of $5,200. We will also ask for "an enquiry into the cruel conduct of the Portuguese watch- **man and his murder of the passenger. We will further post *a notice in all our chips ordering that Chinese shall be *treated with particular consideration and forbidding any "further kicking or ill treatment. As the case has been *pending for a considerable time, we wish to know hether "it is possible to send for the relatives of the deceased
