in this "Fatchan" case, as, at the very time when the firm

decided to disregard my advice and disponse with my assist-

ancu,

I was doing my best to bring them into touch with

the Canton authorities, in connection with the tender for

men of war, und it is in great measure due to my efforts

that the Taikoo Dockyard now stund an excellent chance of

obtaining an order for at least one ship.

You will no doubt have observed that one of the

agenda bofore the meeting reported in Enclosure No. 2 was

to discuss the case of Losers Carlowitz and Compony.

This refers, I understand, to a trivial dispute

between Messrs Carlowitz and Company and a Chinese firm in

Canton regarding the sale of some property attached for

debt..

It is, I think, significant that a case of this

kind, one of common occurrence in Canton, and one which

at ordinary times would attract little or no notice, should

now be taken up by the Self Government Society.

I have the honour to be,

gir.

Your most obodiont humble servant,

A. FA.

(SAR) Harry St.

Acting Consul-General.
