Ballast stone used in the works this quarter (besides the stone used as ballast for sinking and for filling gabbioni).
For raising higher different cribs and dam works in the Gough Island reach- together, 8,218 tons; of this quantity 3,343 tons were taken from the conservancy's own stock, thus far used as platforms on which to store brushwood in places on shore overflow at high tide, and 4,905 tons supplied by the contractor.
In the interest of the works, more especially in that of the new fairway through the junk-chaunel, the latter quantity should have been more than ten times as much. The reason why no more stone arrived is that nearly all the stone juuks available delivered in the Woosung fort jetty, sometimes 3,000 tons per day.

Progress in the works of the Gough Island reach cribwork at Kajow. This triple crib, with a depth of water in front of over 30 feet at low water, is one of the most exposed to strong currents, especially the north side, erib C, nearest to the Kajow Creek. This C erib is now raised to above low tide over its whole length to the normal line (557 feet), and its head, made entirely of strong zinkstuks, has been completed. The top of the head is 160 feet long. The other two cribs, A and B, built out with gabbioni, are also raised to about low water. The head of A raised with layers of zinkstucks to about 15 feet low water. The parallel work in the normal line between A and B raised to 15 feet low water, and between B and C to So far advanced, above 10 feet; all with gabbioni on a flooring of zinkstuks. sufficiently for the present to ward off the main stream from this shore, this important work had to be left for a while incomplete because of more urgency with the dam. works in the upper end of ship-channel.
Damworks at Upper Gough cross the stream of the ship-channel.
Dam L-The two feet of zinkstuks on either side of this dam have been raised
all over to an average height of 23 feet below low water.
Dam II-A double layer of zinkstuks has been sunk in the lower foot of this dam about 120 feet in the deepest part on the Pootung side.
Dam III-A single layer of zinkstuks has been sunk in either foot of this dam over about 250 feet on the Pootung side.
Parallel dam along the normal line.-Bottom layer of zinkstuks, 120 feet wide, extended to 2,405 feet stream upward from mark-pile No. 2, that is, from the end of the high dyke enclosing the mud deposit. Second layer, 84 feet wide, extended to 1,720 feet from mark-pile 2.
The dam of zinkstuks previously raised to above low water has now been further raised with stone to 6 feet above low water to 875 feet from mark-pile 2.
Shore protection at Upper Gough, junk-channel side.-Both high and low water protection against the stream along this concave has been extended to 620 feet below the Upper Gough station.
Parallel dam, Lower Gough.-The lower end of this dam near the passage over the inner bar was being raised to above the low water level, but by want of stone little could be done, so that still too much of the stream during flood-tide flows over it into ship-channel.
Cribwork, left side of junk-channel.--Raising higher and levelling up the works bere and there was continued this quarter.
Progress in the fairway through junk-channel.-Lower part, in cross-sections VIII to XIV, where the new channel or fairway runs along the left shore, which is slightly concave. The following is from a survey made in the beginning of this month of April-
