SECTION 1.

Sir,

Foreign Office to Manchester Chamber of Commerce.

Foreign Office, August 9, 1909. I AM directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 30th ultimo, calling attention to the chaotic condition of the Chinese currency and the consequent difficulties experienced by the British commercial community in China

I am to state, in reply, that the importance of this subject is fully recognized by His Majesty's Government, and that a copy of your letter will be forwarded to His Majesty's Minister at Peking, who has repeatedly attempted to induce the Chinese Government to take steps to improve the currency, and who will no doubt renew his efforts on the first favourable opportunity.

I am, &c.

F. A. CAMPBELL.
