With reference to a request that China should subscribe
towards the proposed University in Hongkong, and with regard
to Y.E.'s Memorandum stating that the Governor of Hongkong had
written asking whether the Chinese Government would be willing
to assist the scheme, a telegram was subsequently received from
the Viceroy at Canton to the effect that the Governor of Hong-
kong had written to him asking for a subscription.
The Board has on various occasions exchanged communications
with the Board of Education on this subject, and it hae now
been decided that the two Boards should each subscribe the aum
of Tls.5,000, Tls.10,000 in all, towards the University. This
intention was mentioned to Y.E. at an interview hold last month
this Board.
The Board has the honour therefore, to forward herorith
218.5,000 from the Board of Education and also Tls.5,000 from
our Board, a total of Tis.10,000, and beg that Y.E. will trans-
mit the same to the Governor of Hongkong for the use of the
University. Awaiting the favour of a reply,
