The Portuguese, however, had encroached both

before and after the signing of the Trasty, nd their mis-

deeds were well known in China and abroad.

The Society had consulted with Chinese at home

and abroad and had received several replies all to the

effect that the old boundaries should be adhered to.

The land was ess ntial to the well being of the people

and not one foot of it should be lightly surrendered to

anybody else. The date for the joint investigation was

now fixed and all patriots should support their side with

all their strength and accept their share of the ■ res-

ponsibility.

Mr. Yang Yao T'ang of Heungshan th n rose to

speak and said that telegrams should be sent to their

friends at home and abroad to support them with all their

strength, and that representatives should be sent into

the interior to obtain signatures. If the Portuguese refus-

ed to act with justice and forcibly seized territory and

infringed
