Some weaks aro Mr. Law, the firm's santurer in "ung-
kong, informed me that he was prepared, in the interests
of the firm's chipping business, to make some monetary
sucrifice to obtain a satisfactory settlement of the case.
I agreed with him that this would be advisable,
but
I felt any advances on his purt while the case in the
Portuguese Court was still ponding would certainly be is-
understood and probably prejudice the watchman's case in
the event of a further enquiry being held.
Mr. Low having loft the matter untirely in my hands,
I have let it be known that I an prepared, as soon as the
prosecution in the Portugese Court is dropped, to advice
Vossrs Butterfield and Swire to make a compassionate
donation to the decassed's wife and children, and it is
on these lines that I am now working to effect a settlement
