This despatch, which was couched in unusually dis-

courteous terms and contained references to the killing

of Chinese by heliahmen in Shanghai and Yankow, which under

the circumstances might well have been omitted, was publish-

ed in extenso, in one of the Canton papers the day after it

reached the Portuguese Consul. This publication, for which

the Viceroy has not denied responsibility, had the immediate

effect of reviving public interest in the "Patshan" case

and giving the Solf Government Rociety and the Preas frosh

Cause to continuo en agitation, which for over two weeks

had been practically dormant..

On Dacombor 30th., ab a largely attended public

meeting, presided over by the notorious Kong Kung Yen,

rosolutions wore passed denouncing the Portuguese Consul

for his statement regarding the Society and the Press

(quoted in the Viceroy's despatch) and calling on the

Portuguese Goverment for ". de Morase removal.

At this mooting the boycott of the "Fatshun" was

again advocated as being the best means of forcing a

e-hearing of the case against the Portuguese Butchman.
