Sir,
January 5th. 1909.
On December 29th. last I had the honour to report
of
to you by telegraph that the British stowmer Tai On",
438 tons register, owned by the Yikon Steamship Company
Limited of Hongkong, had been seized by order of the
Viceroy of Canton while on a voyage from Hongkong to
Kongmoon on a charge of illegally flying the British flag.
I explained how the misunderstanding with rog rẻ to
this vessel's status had arison and I added that I had off-
icially notified the Viceroy that the Tai On" was a
British steamer and requested His Excellency to order
her release.
I concluded by submitting that the Viceroy's action
in detaining the vessel after my explicit assurances
regarding her British status was unjustifiable and I
asked permission to place the matter in the hands of the
Fir J.M. Jordan, K.C.K.G.,
ko., 8o., 8o.,
His Majesty's Minister,
Pekin.
