[1977]

(No. 18.) Sir,

No. 1.

Sir Edward Grey to Mr. Bryce.

Foreign Office, January 11, 1909. THE American Ambassador called to-day at this Office and spoke of the proposed representations to the Chinese Government relating to the dismissal of Yuan-Shih-Rai. He said that Mr. Rockhill, in whom the United States' Government have full confidence, is strongly in favour of representations being made. He had therefore been instructed to ask if Sir J. Jordan would join in making them.

Sir C. Hardinge informed Mr. Whitelaw Reid that I had already sent instructions to Sir J. Jordan to co-operate with his American colleague in this sense.

I am, &c.

(Signed)

E. GREY.
