It would be a great convenience if the
examinations in Cantonese could be made to correspond as
nearly as circumstances permit with those in Pekingese,
since, by this means, a uniformity in the classification
of the attainments of officers would be insured, and the
standard required for gaining a given reward would be
the same in both cases.
In these circumstances, I am to request that
you may be so good as to ascertain Sir F.J.D.Lugard's
opinion as to the possibility of assimilating the
syllabuses in the two languages. Should he consider
such a course possible, I am to request that his
suggestions may be invited with regard to any modifications
which should be made, especially with reference to the
books recommended for study.
A fee of £10 is paid to the examiner in
Pekingese from War Office funds for each examination of
each officer, and I am to say that the Army Council are
prepared to adopt this scale of remuneration for the
examinations in Cantonese also, if it is thought to be
suitable.
I am,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
R&D Brada
