I have to acknowledge the receipt of your

letter of the 18th of March on the subject of the Kowloon Canton Railway.

2.

In our memorandum of the 9th of March the

reference to the "rolling stock" was a mistake. The point upon which we desired your views was that raised

in paragraph 20 of the Chief Resident Engineer's letter to you of the 5th of February (No. 80) in which Mr Eves

discusses a combined workshop and running shed and states that the Governor had agreed to his suggestion that the building of it should be undertaken locally pro- vided no objections were "raised at home".

3. We shall be glad therefore if you will furnish us with your views on the point in order that we may submit the matter for the Secretary of State's considera-

tion and decision.

•2001 done!

P.S. Since the above was written a further letter

No. 83 - dated the 5th of March has been received from the Resident Engineer from which it appears

par.18- that the proposal to obtain the shed locally has been abandoned. There is therefore no need now for you to go into the question

(intld) E.5.
