these will also require some consideration as the power to be

used is not settled yet. There will be certain boilers and

dynamos available from the tunnel plant but I do not believe

the voltage of these suitable for workshop use. I have been

instructed to approach the China Light and Power Company who

have an electric instalation quite close to see what terms

they would offer for supplying current for running the shops and lighting the station. In any case the machines need not

be sent out till after the shops so there is time to go into

the question when I report to you the cost of electric power

as given by the China Light and Power Company.

When Mr Barry was in Shanghai he gave a letter of

who introduction to me to a Mr Edge represents the Metropolitan

Amalgamated C and W. Co and he kindly looked over the drawings

I had prepared and gave it as his opinion that the carriages

were rather too stiff, in as much as with the diagonal bracing

below the windows and the vertical tie bolts the iron gusset

straps are not necessary at the junction of the vertical post

horizontal wooden sills and the diagonals. He considers

that the ordinary bent plate iron kness 1 inch by inch quite

sufficient put into the open angles (1.e. those without

diagonals) below the windows and above the sills. This

alteration he considers will greatly reduce the cost and I am

having it done.

class carriages by 2 inches each and widening the centre seat

by the 4 inches thus gained and putting a back running down

the centre. When designing the carriage .I went carefully

into this question with Mr Grove and he agreed with me that

the narrow passage is a disadvantage as it makes it so difficult

for the third class passenger to reach and leave his seat.
