Gentlemen,

Kowloon,

5th February, 1909

I confirm herewith a cablegram sent you on

29th January 1909 with reference to my indent for a girder bridge for Bridge No.49 across Sam Chun River. It has been decided to make the girders of this bridge for two roads and make only two main girders supporting long

cross girders. Mr.A.J.Barry thought that this would be better than spreading the roads by putting in a centre

girder. I mentioned in my cablegram that the distance centre to centre of girders should be 30 feet 6 inches, this gives a flange width of 2 feet 6 inches leaving 28 feet clear running room.

2. The cross girders can be fish bellied underneath

and project below the level of the bottom boom of the main girders. There should be no difficulty in keeping the longitudinal rail bearers from projecting below the main boom level however. There should be aplate floor right over this bridge with a hand railing both sides.

3. Mr.Barry also advised theapproach spans to the above bridge should be girders instead of arches and also the 20 foot spans of Bridge 48. As all these are in Lofu Station Yard and in a position where a train might draw up and stop before actually coming up to the platform, I think these spans should be floored as well. They are all four double line bridges with roads 13 feet centre to centre. The indent therefore covers four complete spans of four

girders
