I have the honour to confirm my
telegram of the 10th. instant and to acknowledge the

receipt of Your Lordship's telegram in reply dated the 14th.
instant.

The Governor of the Straits
Settlements on the 4th. instant sent me a telegram recon-
-mending Dr. Cooper: but, as this Officer is a married man
with 2 children, and as an unmarried man should, if possible.
be selected for the vacancy, I wrote to Sir John Anderson
on the 14th. instant asking whether an unmarried Officer
was available. It is understood that Dr. Hennessy would be
willing to accept the appointment.
