In continuation of my Despatch

No. 377 of the 6th. instant, I have the honour to inform

Your Lordship that the Fund for the Endowment of the

University now stands at $1,172,140 at the rate of ex-

-change of the day. It is expected that so soon as I am

able to announce that the scheme is no longer a mere

aspiration, but has actually become a project in course of

execution a considerable increase to these funds may be

looked for both from British and Chinese sources.

2.

In these circumstances we have

considered that a stage had now been reached at which it

was legitimate to assume that a sufficient Endowment Fund

had been or would be secured, and to proceed to the dis-

-cussion of the designs for the building. Your Lordship

will recollect that Mr. H. N. Mody had originally promised

to erect the buildings at a cost of $150,000 and to give

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

THE EARL OF CREWE,

&c. ..

800.
