No. 377 of the 6th. instant, I have the honour to inform
Your Lordship that the Fund for the Endowment of the
University now stands at $1,172,140 at the rate of ex-
-change of the day. It is expected that so soon as I am
able to announce that the scheme is no longer a mere
aspiration, but has actually become a project in course of
execution a considerable increase to these funds may be
looked for both from British and Chinese sources.

In these circumstances we have
considered that a stage had now been reached at which it
was legitimate to assume that a sufficient Endowment Fund
had been or would be secured, and to proceed to the dis-
-cussion of the designs for the building. Your Lordship
will recollect that Mr. H. N. Mody had originally promised
to erect the buildings at a cost of $150,000 and to give
