at the Aberdeen Docks. This is the copy of the Account drawn up w Baker (marked X). The Butchery was leased on or about

Tatam made the the 1st. January, 1896, until February, 1897. lease with Yang Cheung. It was a verbal lease. I did not make a cent out of this lease. Tatam was at the Butchery during the time it was leased. The business was sold to Tang Kee in 1897 for $200 which was the cost of furniture. I am $1,400 olean out of pocket. I considered that half the net earnings of the Butchery would cover the full interest. I also expected that the capital would be repaid by the same process. Failing recovering the capital invested I looked to Mr. Tatam to pay me the capital invested. The books were left at the Butchery:when the business was transferred to Tang Kee I took charge of the books and handed them to Mr. Baker.to be made up. Mr. Tatam was not then in the Colony. After the first two weeks I signed all the cheques. All the cheques were signed by me for the Hongkong Butchery.Tatam and I went to the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank when the Butchery was first opened and it was arranged with the Bank that I or Tatan should sign the cheques for the Hong- -kong Butchery. I did not tell the Head of my Department what I was doing. I did not consider it against the regulations. (xhibits A, B, C, and D returned to Mr. Howell). On the 2nd. February, 1905, Tatam told me in the Supreme Court that it would pay me better to give him $500 or $600 and settle all matter between us. This I refused to do. He also stated at the

On the 15th. October, 1909, the day after my arrival a Solicitor came to me and said he had seen Tatam and he told me that the case would cost me about $10,000 in cost and it would be far better to give him (Tatam) a few thousand dollars and settle with him and that Tatam would withdraw all the statement/ he had made to the Government. I absolutely refused the offer and was indignant with him for making such a proposition.
