in reply to your letter of the 18th instant, I an
directed to inform you that His Fxcelleroy the Governor is of
opinion that you have done much good work on the British mootion
of the Kowloon Canton Railway and that you have loyally had the
intareste of Jovernmont at heart. itie ERoullency ie, therefore,
deeply sorry that circumstances have necessitated your rotigna-
tion before any part of the line ie opuned to traffio.
The fact, however, remains that the Consulting
Enginoers, under whose ordere in technical matters you have
worked, demanded your resignation owing to railures in bridges
which will cost this wovernment upwards of $140,000, and that
the Consulting Enginoore conelder that thous falluros are due
to your fault.
Thene circumstances in Hie Ezoolloncy's view
preclude the grant of any bomuat but His Excollangy proposer to
refer this correspondence to the Consulting Engineers, and if
they are of opinion that your services morit the grant of a berium
more especially in view of the fact that you have had no pri-
vilege leavo His Excellency will be glad to reconsider the
question.
