I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of
and to thank you for your letter No. 379/29/114 dated the 5th. instant asking for my views on the proposal of the War Depart- ➡ment to redeem the Crown Rent of Inland Lot No. 427 and charge the amount against the credit now standing in their favour.
This proposal has been considered by the
Governor who understands that it is made with a view to the
sale of the balance of the present lease to private persons and regrets that the tenor of the Secretary of State's instructions as the tenure of land in the Colony by such persons being in every case subject to a Crown Rent forbids His Excellency from entertaining the proposal now made.

As you are aware Rent from Crown Lands in
private occupation forms a considerable portion of the annual revenue of this Colony from which, after deducting 20 per centum for Military Contribution, its annual expenditure is met. To start a new system of commuting rent and thus alienating (in this case indirectly) this asset to private persons would
tend to affect the future revenue and military contribution of
the Colony in a manner which appears to His Excellency un-
-desirable.
