Since an entirely new factor which has arisen the question of my

remuneration was last considered, and that the interminable

disputes between the Chief Resident Engineer and Messrs Leigh

and Orange have occupied a very considerable portion of my time

during the last 12 months, and have involved questions of great

difficulty and importance.

In this letter I have endeavoured to confine my statements

to the period mentioned in your letter under reply, viz, 1st

October, 1908 to 1st October, 1909.

I wish to point out however that I do not base my applica-

tion for exchange compensation on any extra pressure of work, but

on the simple pleas of fairness and equity, as I can conceive

of no reason why I alone should be excluded from the benefits of

exchange compensation which have been concede to all other

officers who come from sterling countries.
