make any representation with regard to my salary for 1908, and consequently the sum of $10,000 was again inserted in the estimates for 1908, and I have since been paid at that rate.

Owing to the fall in exchange, $10,000 is at present considerably less than £1,000 sterling, and I understand that the estimates for 1909 are framed on an exchange of 1/9d. at which rate £1,000 equals $11,428.59 or thereabouts; consequently if the exchange rules at 1/94. I shall receive $1,428.59 lean than the £1,000 which I submit I am entitled to expect. venture to submit that there is no reason why my office should not be placed on the same footing as that of other Civil

I am aware that Lord servants in this particular matter. Elgin in his despatch of the 9th August 1906 (a copy of which was sent to me No. 7004/1906 C.O.D.), stated that in the event of a fall in the exchange value of the dollar no applica- tion for additional remuneration would be considered, but at that time His Lordship had refused the application for exchange compensation made by the whole of the Civil Service, and he afterwards, on representations made by the Colony, reconsidered his decision and admitted, in effect, that the Civil servants were entitled to exchange compensation whether on sterling

or silver basis.

I submit that it would be equitable for the Govern- ment to allow me compensation for the present year so aa to make my remuneration up to £1,000; and I further submit that

be in future years it will only just to scoord me the same relief that has been granted to other Civil servants in the matter of compensation, as if my remuneration were fixed at £1,000 sterling and calculated according to the scheme
