Estimates 1909.

With reference to the estimates for 1909, I have the

honour to call attention to the remuneration of the Crown

Solicitor.

My remuneration was fixed for the year 1906 at £1,000

sterling including the cost of any staff, clerical or technical,

and all other expenses incidental to my office (except electric

light).

On the 2nd July 1906, I had the honour to point out to

you, in a letter of that date, that, owing to the high rate of

exchange then ruling, I was receiving less than the $10,000 which

letter and kindly offered me the choice between £1,000 and

$10,000 per annum, and, exchange then being high, I naturally

selected $10,000, and that amount was inserted in the estimate

for 1907 and paid to me.

At that time all the civil servants whose salaries were

paid on a sterling basis were pressing the Government to allow

them compensation on account of the high exchange; but the

Government refused to accede to their request until July 1907,

when the scheme contained in Lord Elgin's despatch No.122 of the

11th June 1907 was adopted and made retrospective to the 1st

January 1907.

At that time I was absent on leave and was unable to

Hon.Kr.F.H.May, C.M.G.,

Colonial Secretary.
