leave of Mr. W. Rees-Davies for a period of 6 months and
12 days, during three months of which he received no
salary for his work. It was not however possible for him to
combine a very large private practice with the official
duties of Attorney-General without assistance and the
onerous task of drafting Ordinances was therefore assigned
to Mr. Fletcher under his general supervision. During his
tenor of the post of Attorney-General Sir Henry Berkeley
has carried out the duties to my entire satisfaction though
the large demands upon his time, arising from a particular-
-ly busy time in his private capacity as a Barrister made
it impossible for him to devote as much time as he would
have wished to his official work.

Sir Henry is acknowledged to be an
excellent advocate and his general temperament and unfail-
-ing good humour have made him very popular in the Colony.
Or his abilities as a lawyer, I have had little opportunity
of judging but should Your Lordship decide to accede to
his request I can obtain, should you so desire, the
opinions of those who were associated with him during the
time he held the post of Attorney-General of this Colony.
I have the honour to be, My Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient,
humble servant,
Governor,&c.
