I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter of August 20th, relative to the appointment of Mr. C. A. D. Melbourne to the post of Senior Deputy Registrar.

I regret that my Despatch on this subject was forwarded to the Secretary of State before the receipt of your reply to my letter of August 17th. It had not been my intention that it should be despatched until after I had heard Your Honour's views.

The Secretary of State has now telegraphed approving the appointment, and I learn with great regret that Your Honour is opposed to it. My recommendation was of course largely influenced by the view of the Head of the Department who very strongly, and for considered reasons recommended Mr. Melbourne's selection for the post.

On reading paragraph 5 of Your Honour's letter I at once afforded Mr. Justice Gompertz an opportunity of expressing his opinion.
