With reference to my Despatch

No. 237 of the 14th.of last August and to Your Lordship's
telegram of the 21st. ultimo approving the proposals made

I have the honour to forward the correspondence
noted in the annexed schedule.
2.
I take strong exception to the
Chief Justice's statements that Mr. Melbourne is wholly
unfit from any point of view to undertake Registry work"
and that his appointment is "one most seriously detrimental
to the public good". Your Lordship will observe that the
opinion of the Chief Justice is not shared either by the
Puisne Judge or by the Registrar of the Supreme Court,
while Mr. Gompertz informs me that in the opinion of two
prominent members of the legal profession, whom he consulted,
the appointment is a suitable one.
