Proposed Estimates

Present Estimates (1909).

Increase................... $39,536

4,827

$34,711

(1) Present Staff, Imports and Exports Office.

(2) This man is already drawing maximum of 2nd Grade and think should be placed in 1st Grade in view of considerable increase of important work which will devolve on him.

(3)

(4) I shall want an additional man to keep the numerous books which will be necessary and I consider 3rd Grade suggested none too high.

I have put down the 2 Sanitary Inspectors to be temporarily transferred at the maximum as I am not aware what they are at present drawing nor indeed who is coming. I cannot say I am in favour of Sanitary Inspector for responsible work of the kind with many temptations attached. I should be glad therefore if their transfer could be regarded only as a temporary measure pending engagement of permanent men. I do not consider we can get thoroughly reliable men under the scale I have put in.

(5)

(7) I have inserted $360. I shall be fully that amount out of pocket.

I have put in same pay as is given to Harbour Department Launch-hands.

(8). This is a lower allowance given in the Sanitary Department and I think reasonable.

(9) I have added £56 to the present incidental vote (Imports and Exports Office) for sealing wax etc.

(10) As the Police Launch will only be available for one week it will be necessary to purchase a launch forthwith.

15th September, 1909.

(Sd.) C. W. Beckwith, Lt.

Asst. Harbour Master,

acting for Harbour Master.
