with no intermission whatever; and on ry return voyage, in

the beginning of last year, it began again in the Indian

Ocean, and has continued more or less since.

In earlier years it was only in

the hot months; it now extends through most of the winter

as well. It is only in the morning, but it is depressing,

and I carry on my work throughout the sumer under great

disadvantages.

The irritated, rav, tender condi-

-tion of my mouth and throat that has been so frequently

present this sumer is an indication that the state of the

alimentary canal is becoming more serious, and while not

yet to be diagnosed as sprue, is pointing decidedly in

that direction.

On my way back to Hongkong eighteen-

months ago, I consulted Sir Patrick Manson regarding my

surmer tendencies; and after going carefully into the

matter he expressed the opinion that I suffer from a low

chronic catarrhal inflammation of the mucous membrane of

the bowel, tending to a gradual atrophy of the intestinal

walls. He said that, whether it became actual sprue or not,

the condition would tend to become worse, and would eventual-

-ly become incurable unless I left the tropics. If I got

home soon,

it would probably continue in the summer-time even in England for four or five years longer, but eventual-

-ly things would improve; if I remained much longer in

Hongkong, it would be incurable. For these reasons he

strongly advised me to arrange to leave the East as soon as possible. He expressed his willingness to be referred to by

the Government, if it were considered desirable.

Patrick Manson's opinion.

Dr. James Cantlie confirmed Sir
