Registrar-General's Office,
Hongkong, 2nd. July, 1907.
I have the honour to enquire whether the
Government is prepared to grant a site for a district plague
hospital for Wanchai on the rear portion of the site on which
No. 3 Police Station stood, and if so on what terms. The
members of the Chinese Public Dispensaries Committee have been
endeavouring for some time to have such a hospital provided for
the eastern portion of the town and there is now every prospect
of the necessary funds being forthcoming. We have obtained the
option of purchasing certain houses in Nullah Lane but there
are objections to them - they are low and stuffy and they are
at the entrance to a street which is occupied by well-to-do
families and when we visited the district yesterday we
unanimously came to the conclusion that a hospital built on the
site now proposed would be in every way preferable. I enclose
a tracing showing the locality and have filled in in red ink
the proposed site and approach to it. There should be no
difficulty in selecting a site on the area marked in red. The
ground would not require much levelling which is important from
our point of view, and there will still be room and to spare
for a row of houses in front facing on Queen's Road East. Our
option of purchasing the houses in Nullah Lane expires on the
12th. July, so I hope the matter may be considered urgent.
I have etc.,
(sd.) A. W. Brewin,
he Honourable
The Colonial Secretary.
Registrar-General.
