ondosure 1.

In continuation of my Confidential

Despatch of June 12th., I have the honour to enclose copy

of a letter from Mr. D. R. Law in reply to a question from

me as to the progress of events in connection with the

Boycott of the Firm of Butterfield and Swire on account of

the "Fatshan" incident.

2.

It would appear from this letter

that the Firm has complied with the humiliating terms

imposed upon them in so far as the Anoy section of the

Society is concerned, and that the Canton section are now

anxious to "save their face" by requiring the Firm to give

a public tea-party to be attended by the Viceroy of Canton

and the British Consul.

3.

Mr. Fox has declined to be present

if the dismissal of the Master of the vessel is to be one

of the terms imposed. He has been so good as to embody his

views

&C..

THE EARL OF CREWS 3
