I replied therefore on June 16th by telegram to the effect that I had called upon Mr. Eves to resign and he had tendered his resignation, and I enquired whether Mr. Lindsey had been appointed by the Indian Board in pursuance of my request, fearing lest a misunderstanding might arise if the Consulting Engineers nominated an Officer after I had definitely asked the Indian Board to do so and afforded them the fullest information as to the qualifications required.

To this telegram I received a reply on the 17th instant that the Government of India had not nominated Mr. Lindsey, but they would be asked to second him, and enquiring for what period he would be wanted. I replied to Your Lordship on the 21st idem inviting your attention to the correspondence with the Government of India (forwarded to you on May 8th) in which the period for which he would be required was specified, and from which Your Lordship would be able at once to see how the position vis-a-vis the Indian Board stood.
