I consider the present pay inadequate for an officer holding the position of Assistant Supt. of an important department and earnestly recommend that it be increased to $3000 rising to $3600, and the printing allowance might then be abolished. The effect would be to increase Mr. Craig's prospective pension, and bring it more into line with those of other officers of his standing in the Civil Service. The immediate increase in expenditure would be small. Mr. Craig's personal abilities and energy and the splendid work he has done for the Government, are so well known to you that I need not here dilate upon them. I sincerely hope that it may be found possible to give effect to the above recommendation in favour of this most deserving Public Servant,
The Honourable
The Colonial Secretary.

Capt.Supt.of Police &
Supt. of Victoria Gaol.
