HONGKONG, 29th June, 1909.

Dear Sir,

As requested by you, we beg to confirm our willingness to agree to the following conditions as required by the Self Government Society in Santon to settle the "Fatshan" trouble as far as we are concerned,

in return for which they will issue instructions that will cause the boycott against our steamers to be withdrawn.

1. Appoint a new Captain to the "Fatshan".

2. Pay compensation of $3,200 to the relatives of the man who died on the "Fatshan".

3. To write a despatch to the British Consul asking him to write to the Viceroy asking him to apply to the Portuguese Consul to have the case retried.

4. A notice to be posted in the steamer "Fatshan" that none of the crew under any circumstances molest the Chinese passengers and that if there is any trouble it must be brought to the Captain to settle.

Thanking you for your kind assistance in this matter.

We are, etc.,

(sd) Butterfield & Swire.
