acts of retaliation on the part of the Self Government Society if they disobeyed its orders, provided of course that those acts took place within the jurisdiction of this Government.

I am in hopes that the Viceroy will feel that he will "lose face" if the Boycott of your Firm is maintained in spite of his very strongly worded proclamation in your praise and I am of opinion that this proclamation affords an opportunity to impress upon the merchants who are at present dominated by the orders of the Self Government Society that they should throw off its yoke and declare themselves to be on the side of the authorities. In this action they cannot fail to have the support of the Viceroy in view of his proclamation as well as of this Government and the result would possibly be to destroy the influence of the Society which I understand is at present much weakened, and has been further weakened by the proclamation. This is the course I had intended to pursue had you furnished me with their names not by means of any public exhortation, but by private advice. If the Self Government Society however at this crisis maintains its hold upon these merchants, its position will be greatly strengthened and a matter which more particularly concerns me - its domination and influence in this Colony will become dangerously effective.
