Re the case of Gulab, I herewith forward you an extract from my old Detective Duty Book, also the full particulars as far as I can remember of what actually did take place:-
Extract from Duty Book.
By order of the C.D.I., along with P.S. 21 Terrett, went into ambush in Tun Wo Lane, and saw an act of great indecency by Jemadar "Gulab" of the Police Force.
About 10 P.M. on the 18th January, 1908, the chief Detective Inspector called me to the Detective Office and told me that Jemadar "Gulab" was going to meet C.C.159 in Tun Wo Lane any time about midnight and that he was supposed (as far as the Chinese Constable had led himself and others to believe) to ask the C.C. to commit the crime of "Buggery". The C.D.I. gave me instructions to go down to Lyndhurst Terrace shortly after 11 P.M. and there meet C.C. 159, and he would put me in a position in the lane from where I would be able to see what took place. The C.D.I. and myself then went down to the Central Police Station Compound and were walking up and down when we were joined by Sergeant Terrett. I suggested to the C.D.I. that two would be better than one and asked to be allowed to take Sergeant Terrett with me, this he consented to and at 11.15 P.M. Sergeant Terrett and myself went down to Lyndhurst Terrace where we met C.C. 159 who was on duty.
