statement made a copy thereof, and handed the statement to the said Assistant Superintendent of Police. said statement your Petitioner denied the charge made against him.

As appears by the said letter of the Colonial Secretary above mentioned the charge sheet was endorsed by the Captain Superintendent of Police on the 20th January 1908 "admit the charge and is suspended" whereas on the said 20th day of January 1908 your Petitioner had not been charged and (as appears above) no statement nor any admission whatever had been made by him.

Your Petitioner is a married man and is now, and has been for more than two years past, continously residing with his wife and family.

Your Petitioner has on several occasions rendered important service to the Government of Hongkong by discovering the perpetrators of crimes committed in the Colony, notably in the case of the murder, in the month of May 1907, of a native of India by six Sikhs whom but the Police Detectives failed to discover by whom your Petitioner caused to be arrested, and who were eventually convicted.

In consequence of these services rendered by your Petitioner in the last preceding paragraph mentioned your Petitioner incurred the enmity of the Sikhs residing in Hongkong some of whom are the members of the Police Force.

18. Your Petitioner was entitled to retire from the service on the expiration of 15 years and at the expiration of 17 years from the date of his joining the Police Force at which time he held the rank of Sergeant-Major
