Had this come about, the Normal Mastership would have remained in his hands without interruption for a number of years, as Mr. Grant, who is Mr. Tanner's immediate senior, would always be available for appointment to the Second Mastership whenever the holder of that post happened to be away on leave, or acting for the Head Master during his absence.

Should Mr. Woodcock's appointment however be confirmed, the old irregularity will continue; and this is a Department in which it is absolutely essential that, in order to obtain satisfactory results, a systematic scheme of work should be arranged and carried out.

We, Your Lordship's petitioners, have ventured to lay these facts before you in complete confidence that our claims will meet with Your Lordship's just and careful consideration, and we most earnestly request that, should Mr. Woodcock's appointment have been already confirmed, Your Lordship will reconsider such confirmation and allow us to look forward to that regular sequence of promotion in Queen's College, to which by the conscientious discharge of our duties, we have always endeavoured to prove ourselves entitled.

We have the honour to be, My Lord,

Your Lordship's obedient servants,

W. Grant
R. E. O. Birkbeck
Tanner, R. J.
S. P. de Martin
H. E. Sanett
