in connection with the City of Victoria and Kowloon, with populations of 200,000 and 86,000 respectively, is under the control of the Director of Public Works. This control includes the administration of an elaborate Buildings Ordinance (for the preparation and amendment of which the Director of Public Works was largely responsible) and of the extensive sewerage system and Waterworks. The revenue from the latter amounted last year to $335,000 (say £30,000).

Public Works in this Colony are of an exceptionally diversified nature, as Harbour Works and Lighthouses come within the scope of the Department in addition to those usually met with, namely, Public Buildings, Roads, Waterworks, Sewers, Drains, etc. The importance of the Public Works may be gathered from the following statement of a few of the largest carried out during recent years or at present in progress:-
