I have the honour to acknowledge Your Lordship's Despatch No. 98 of May 22nd, 1908, in which you point out that the salaries of the Directors of Public Works of the Straits and Federated Malay States are fixed at £1,200 per annum and that you are therefore unable to consider the proposal to assign a higher salary to the post in this Colony.

I have no knowledge of the duties and responsibilities attaching to the Directors of Public Works in the places named, but I venture to point out the exceptionally arduous and responsible nature of the duties which devolve upon the Director of Public Works here, and to compare the salary assigned to the post with those of other senior officers to which it should bear a close relation.
