345 can hardly be regarded as a suitable designation for the Officer who is charged with the supervision of Education generally in the Colony, and it should, I think, be changed to that of Director of Education, since the responsibilities of the post have (as I shall presently describe) very greatly increased of late years with the extraordinary increase in the growth of education in the Colony.
3. There are at present two grades of salary attached to the post of Inspector of Schools, namely $4,800 rising by triennial increments of $300 to $5,400, and £600 rising by similar increments of £40 to £720. As the supervision of Queen's College will entail a considerable increase both of responsibility and of work it would seem reasonable that the emoluments of the office should be increased. Moreover during the last 8 years a very considerable increase in work and responsibility has (as I said above) accrued to the Education Department as may be seen by the following tabular comparison:
