Engines in our Shups bu, spacs should be left for a TurT] = table and

-bapinod the area under consid ration would suffice for

this, and was the best in all respecte. The proposals re-

-garding ocmbining the repair of Istnches with the Railway

Shops were negligible from a Railway point of view, and

on the whole seemed not worth consiä.ration. The total

cost is about $13,000 per annum and as the Goverment

Marine Surveyor estinates only 10% saving by doing them

ourselves the saving would only be $1,300 per annum. The

cost of tre Slipway is $9,000 a few extrt, machines would

De required and a valuable piece of land would be hypothe-

-cated to the Slipway. It would therefore probably not pay.

Ferries.

We discussod at groat length the question

of the participation of the Railway in any increase in the

Perry sraffio dua to the opening of the Railway. Mr. Barry

conaldored it quite feasible and justifiable to establish

* Railway Tarry, but proferable to come to terms with

existing ferry-companies if possible. The difficulties of

• Railway ferry were discussed. If it only ran in connect-

-ion with the few trains leaving Kowloon it would not pay

and blue steamers would be largely idle, a large capital

ow lay in steamers would be necessary. If it ran constantly

it would be in corpetition with sho Star Ferry and other

private companies for traffic unconnected with the Railway

and there would be a great outcry. It must run steamer's

not only to the Kowloon Station but nime to Yximati Station

two distinct services. It nuat acquire a Railway Pier in

Victoria and non exista, with many other difficulties. Mr.

Sarry mugeusted & charge per capitus on all panzengers

okrried by Parries. It would be difficult to sky when this

should be started, and it would be ragun.ad. It was agreed

that the sizplest way would probably be to increase pier

ents from the date of the opening of the Railway, and to

call for triennial returns of profits and traffic and
