assured that their technical instructions to the Chief Resident Engineer are being precisely followed, and the Community here will also naturally demand some guarantee against a repetition of mistakes due to a failure to carry out instructions, supposing that the Consulting Engineers are satisfied to employ Mr. Eves to carry out their detailed instructions, and recommend this Government to continue to employ him.

Before taking any steps in this matter, I shall await the formal report of the Consulting Engineers and an expression of Your Lordship's opinion, which, if possible, I hope may be communicated by telegram.
