I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your letter No. 379/29/132 of the 4th instant, enclosing copy of a letter from the War Office asking that the Colonial Government will credit the War Department with the capitalised value of the Crown Rent, at 25 years purchase, of the property known as Spring Gardens in the Colonial Military Lands Account.

In support of their request the War Office refer to the practice laid down in the correspondence noted in the margin.

In reply I am to point out that the correspondence in question refers to land which falls under the operation of Colonial Office Circulars of 1890 and 1894; and that the property known as Spring Gardens is not in the category of such land, a fact which was recognised in the letter from the War Office quoted in the margin above.

Spring Gardens, as you are aware, was purchased on behalf of the War Department from a private individual. The Crown Rent was waived by the Colonial Government.
