Sir,

Headquarters, Canton,

October 24th, 1859.

I have the honour, by direction of the Major-General Commanding, to request that you will be pleased to move His Excellency the Governor of Hongkong to exempt from local taxation the Inland Lots No.101 (Brooks' Cottage) and No.427 (Macleod's House, Spring Gardens), they having been purchased, and used solely for Military purposes, and to allow the sums disbursed on account of Crown Rents for the former £34 "4" and the latter $75..

The Major-General is anxious that this should obtain His Excellency's sanction in order to prevent the necessity of a reference to the Home Authorities.

I am, &c.,

(sd.) F. George Foley,

Col.

Military Secretary.

Honourable

The Colonial Secretary,

Hongkong.
