3. The total cost to Government of this unfortunate affair has therefore been $5,993.65: but I am advised that, had the case gone for trial, the decision would certainly have been adverse to the Government and that in that event the expenses incurred would have been much heavier.

4. With reference to paragraph 10 of my Despatch, above quoted, I have the honour to report the costs in the case of the claims of the owners of Nos. 88 & 92 were $3,718.45. Therefore the total cost to Government of these two cases has been as follows:-
