To The Colonial Office Gentlemen,

Mongkong Police, at present residing at 3 Lecham Gardens Mews, South Kensington, London.

REC. C.O. 35449 29 SEP 08

I, Sergeant of the Hong Kong Police, at present on nine months' leave from 21 March to 20th Dec. inclusive, am due to arrive back in Hong Kong on the last date mentioned, & have been certified medically fit to resume my appointment.

I have already furnished the Crown Agents with the respective names & ages of my family, four in number. The eldest child is an adopted child - the daughter of a deceased relative, the Crown Agents state they cannot allow her a free passage with reference being made to the first letter of the Colonial Office.

I therefore make application that a free passage for my adopted child be provided for her, as she is a member of my family and has taken my name.

If, however, a free passage for her is refused, I further make application that a passage be provided for her, the cost of same to be defrayed by Govt. The cost of same to be not more than £... [? 3 children, or 4 if wife included? - Put it as in Col. Office].

Before doing so, however, I trust that the legality of my application for a free passage be carefully considered. Having regard to the 3 children, there is no doubt that the rule can be stretched to cover the adopted girl.

I further ask for an extension of 11 days' leave for two reasons: to enable my eldest child to finish a class examination, & to enable me to secure a through passage on the S.S Nyanza. This latter saves a deal of trouble in having to change steamers at Colombo.

27.9.09.

I have the honour to be, Your most obedient servant,

J.G. Gerrard
