GENERAL POST OFFICE, LONDON.
9 DEC 08
December 1908.
Sir,
I am directed to acquaint you, for the information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, that a letter has been received by the Postmaster General from the Post Office of Hong Kong announcing the death on the 30th of September last of Mr. L. A. M. Johnston, Postmaster General of the Colony, and that Mr. E. Cornewall Lewis has been appointed to act in that office as from 1st of October,
As the Secretary of State is aware, an allowance of £100 per annum is made by this Department to the Postmaster General of Hong Kong. The amount payable (£25) for the third Quarter of this year has been claimed in the relative Account with Hong Kong Post Office as payable to Mr. Johnston's widow, whose signature as the person to whom the amount should be paid has been accepted provisionally.
I am to enquire whether the Postmaster General is to understand that Mr. Lewis's appointment is permanent and that the allowance of £100 should be paid to him as from 1st of October.
I am,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
Archibald
Assistant Secretary
To the Secretary of State for the Colonies,
COLONIAL OFFICE.
